"Having trouble downloading a large file? You're using AOL, Aren't you?"
...That's typically how the
conversation begins... followed by "Yes... how did you know?!"
AOL users typically have difficulty downloading large
files because AOL, for some unknown reason, believes users shouldn't be
connected for more than about 15 minutes without being knocked offline.
Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do to eliminate this problem, but we have
two suggestions...
Option 1:
Switch to an ISP who doesn't
unceremoniously knock you offline every few minutes. You may also wish to consider some of the free
internet services such as:
You'll have to put up with a bit of
advertising while online, but the price is right. Typically, they allow 10 hours
per month of access for free, which is plenty of time if all you are using it
for is downloading
If you'd rather not have to
contend with advertising, there are many services that offer unlimited internet
access for under $10/month. Compare that to AOL's $23.95/month. So, stop wasting
money with an inferior provider, take off the training wheels, and switch to a
real ISP. While you're at it, consider high-speed access such as DSL or
cable modem service if it's available in your area.
Option 2:
Use a utility such as
Real Download.
This program allows you to download large files by allowing the download to pick
up where it left off when you were knocked off line. While you'll still
have to reconnect, you won't have to start over. We've experimented with
this utility and have found it to be indispensable if you're stuck using AOL.
Both free and licensed version are available.
